february '08 tour revisited |
| The February tour is now over, but somehow the reality still has to sink in. I still wake up thinking, "Is today's soundcheck at five?". It was certainly an exciting tour, with plenty of highlights. The first part of the tour started in the U.K., with shows in Leicester, London, Newcastle and Newport. Starting with a tentative beginning in Leicester (19/2), it was great to see Robert's band (featuring Chris Spedding on guitar, Todd Glass on drums and Greasy Carlisi on bass) grow in confidence with each successive show. RG was in strong voice as usual, and delighted the crowd with several additions to the setlist, like "Someday, Someway", "Something's Gonna Happen" (both from the Marshall Crenshaw songbook) and the Donnie Owens classic "Need You". In Newcastle, it was fun to say hi to the 'Now Dig This' people, including editor Trevor Cajiao and his family as well as Howard Cockburn, while in Newport (23/2), Robert jammed together with local rockabilly hero Crazy Cavan on a rollickin' medley of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On" and "Red Hot". This was truly rock 'n' roll at its very best, and you could tell that both men were having fun. On to Prague, where the concert at the Roxy had received quite a bit of press in the mainstream media. On February 25th, Robert and Chris did an acoustic set on Czech radio, where they performed "A Picture Of You", "Love Me" and "A Mess O' Blues". The Prague concert on the following day was simply amazing, one of the best of the tour. One of the highlights of the show was an impromptu "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone". It was cool to see that there were people present from surrounding countries like Slovakia, Germany and even Switzerland. On to Umea, Sweden, where record store Burmans Music held a "Robert Gordon & Chris Spedding Day". Owner Stefan Nilsson looked genuinely surprised when both artists entered his store! Stefan requested two Chris Spedding songs "Hey Miss Betty" and "Silver Bullet", and both were performed that night (28/2). The concert at the Katalin in Uppsala on the 29th was on a par with the concert in Prague, simply first-class. Robert's powerful voice really excelled on songs like "Look Who's Blue" and "Beside You", while Chris amazed the crowd with "Guitar Jamboree". The tour closing show at the Mejeriet in Lund was a fun concert, and it was great to see so many of our friends from nearby Denmark. Despite feeling tired from all the travelling, Robert was in good form and he performed several requests, including "Summertime Blues" and "Need You". The last few shows in Sweden ended the tour on a high, with good attendances, excited crowds and strong shows. In April, Robert has another tour coming up, this time with the Marco DiMaggio band, while in May and July, he will be doing shows with Chris Spedding & band in countries like Spain, Germany and the U.K. For booking info, please contact us at deelen@elvis.dk |
